The future Partnership Sustainable Food Systems:Consequences for Food Science and Technology
At the “11th Central European Congress on Food and Nutrition” in 2022, FOODPathS coordinator Hugo de Vries delivered a presentation titled “The Future Partnership for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS): Consequences for Food Science and Technology (FST) and Vice Versa.”
Hugo de Vries highlighted the vital role the Partnership for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) will play in transforming the future of food. This partnership aims to unite key actors across the food industry, research, and policy sectors to drive sustainable practices in food production, processing, and consumption. He stressed that the collaboration through this partnership will be essential to tackle the environmental, social, and economic challenges facing global food systems.
De Vries explained that Food Science and Technology (FST) must evolve alongside this partnership to address sustainability goals, such as reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, and adapting to healthier, more sustainable diets. He pointed out that SFS will not only influence FST but also benefit from innovations in food science, particularly in areas like circularity, new technologies, and product development.
The SFS partnership is seen as a crucial bridge to help FST become a key player in building sustainable food systems, ensuring future food solutions are both scientifically sound and aligned with global sustainability goals. This mutual relationship between SFS and FST will drive innovation and promote the transition to healthier, more sustainable food systems worldwide.
